It's quiet, it's early and it's peaceful. The sounds of the city grows louder as it begins to take a breath, the military though has been about business since before the sun peaked over the mountains. Ever notice when you first get up how quiet it is and how the slightest sound carries for miles and how the aromas of everything is distinguishable. Sitting on the edge of San Diego Bay in the early morning is the perfect place to to let all of your senses open up and notice life. Nature and civilization come together and share the same space, not always peacefully but they do share. As I look across the bay, a blanket of fog has begun to creep in, for some reason the fog enhances the sounds of everything. So, you look around and what do you see and hear. A slight off shore breeze know as Coastal Eddy, continues to bring in the fog, the marina filled with sail boats of all sizes is less than a hundred yards away and the tinkle of hardware slapping the mast in like a seaside marina wind chime. Just a slight breeze pushes the small waves against the shore making a small slap slap slap on the shore line. Birds are all around squawking and screeching, looking for the first meal of the day, Sea gulls, Pelicans, small and large wading birds, and the famous Least Tern, all searching for an easy breakfast. The gulls will take anything including trash, the Pelican, he wants a good size fish if he can catch one unaware, and the wading birds, any little morsel they can find in the mud and sand will do. So nature is up and about its business, Civilization wakes up with a more robust attitude. The sounds of industry begins to blare across the bay as NASCO's ship building begins to come to full stride. Jet airliners taking off from San Diego International air port rumble as the jets hurl down the path to free air. Then of course there are the cars, helicopters, and then the sound of trouble, a siren penetrates all the other sounds as if to say pay attention to me, pull over, and get out of my way. It's 8 am, the sun is all the way over the mountains the sky is blue the water bluer and the National Anthem has just completed, now the Military is ready for action. All of a sudden the realization of where you are breaks into full awareness. The Navy SEALS have just launched an all out ocean assault not more than 200 yards away, Mortars and 50 caliber machine gun fire fills the air. The birds are gone the sounds of industry are gone, the wind chimes are gone, Serious in your face men of action are training for the day when serious business is the order of the day. For these men, which most will look like just boys, their destiny will be to stare into the face of evil, kill it, walk away and have a beer with their buddies while you and I sit at home watching "The Big Bang Theory" with a glass of wine and then crawl into a warm bed for the evening. The assault is over, the beach has been taken, the birds are back complete with the sounds of nature and civilization, WHAT A PLACE. Oh yeah, don't forget I really don't like California.
